Sunday 9.8.09

Nick and I had a lovely snoozy day today, while the kids did their share of the chores. They are both motivated, H has her girlfriend visiting tomorrow, and Nina's bed is due to arrive. I need to get myself together as my brother arrives on Wednesday and then we're off to Edinburgh to take in the Fringe. Also, Nina gently told me off, rightly too.

I spent time with Nick watching quite a bit of TV. There was a programme about New Zealand customs authorities confiscating food from (mainly) Chinese people. Strangely compelling viewing. Duck's tongue, a delicious delicacy. Who knew? After that, there was a Louis Theroux special about the 'Crystal Meth Lifestyle' in California. Some of Louis' work has been shot through with -for want of a better phrase- piss taking. Not so this time, by accident or by design, I doubt that it's possible to make fun out of the misery that the drug is seemingly causing, generation by generation, the smoke pervading the already miserable communities it touches. I don't know anybody who uses it, but there seems to be no end of opportunities for people to mess up their lives with drink, and skunk, and that's before looking to the harder stuff. By the power of TV, I can be a bliss-filled voyeur, free from harmful effects. So far. Fingers crossed, and wood touched.
