Thursday 11.6.09

A slow, slow day, and for the first time in years, I have to admit I was bored. Only for about half an hour so though. It's not really in my nature to be bored, which is why I'm able to be so lazy and get so little done, my mind is always occupied on some nonsense. I do have a bit of the feeling that its time for a new project though, so maybe I'm going to make it happen. Maybe.

Nick and I went to our usual pizza shop for tea tonight. We're regulars there. They always have some kind of deal on, but we found that they'd changed the leaflet so the deals weren't obvious. Nick said we'd just have the pizza and the woman serving told us that we would get two free garlic bread with that. Nice of her, we thought, she sort of knows us and is always friendly. As an afterthought I bought a tin of pop to drink while we waited, and we sat down.

I picked up one of the new leaflets to read (see, I'm never bored), and we chatted and drank the coke. I got around to the back of the leaflet where the deals were listed. There in front of me was our deal. Except that it was better than our deal, because as well as the two free garlic bread, the offer included two free cans of pop. I pointed it out to Nick and we wagged our eyebrows at each other, checking for small print. The heavy truth dawned. Our friendly assistant had told us half the story. This seemed more outrageous than not telling us that there was an offer at all. We had just asked for the pizza, so I would have accepted an argument that she had served up our request. To tell us about the bread but not the pop was odd, and to my mind a bit mean. It was evident that she had made the omission on purpose as my having paid for a can of pop must have reminded her.

I felt a bit complicated about this. I don't like to make a fuss, and I'm a bit reticent at the times I feel hard done by, always expecting to be shot down in flames. I looked to Nick to complain, but could see he wasn't going to. The woman who had served us was on the phone. I thought I saw a get out. The pizza might be passed to us by the other guy, so that I could casually ask for the free cans. I actually, actually held my breath waiting to see if the pizza would beat the end of the call. It didn't, but the guy was handing it over, so I asked for the pop. The two servers looked at each other, and the woman had the good grace to look embarrassed. The pop appeared. We left happy, and shared the pop with the kids.

It still seems a strange, penny-pinching way for the shop to carry on though . I'm pretty sure it's their own business, a franchise, so they perhaps don't get to choose the offers, but still.....

I daresay we'll be back though. We've been going there since the mid 90's when the shop opened, they do good pizza.

Nina and I spent the evening together gossiping about the TV and schools, and taking Darcy for a walk. We're back to having good times together, which is lovely. I went to bed 'specially early to spend some time with Nick, but he was fast asleep. Can't have everything I suppose.
